A Day Without Poetry

by Tom Bajoras

There he lies,
silent,
having said
all he needed to.

His friends
remember how
they laughed and cried
and saw the world more clearly
than if he’d never
been a part of it.

Next to him,
his secret journal
is open now for all to read:
fifty years of
poetry becoming thoughts,
thoughts becoming poetry,
until today.

Even the prophets have become wind.
